Kaluga region belongs to Central federal district. It is located in the middle of the European part of Russia. The region borders on Moscow, Tula, Oryol, Bryansk, Smolensk regions, and with the capital of the state.
The regional center of Kaluga region is the city of Kaluga. It is possible to see architectural monuments of 18th-19th centuries in Kaluga. Also, unique historical collections are stored in the museums of the city.
Obninsk is another big city of Kaluga region. It was here where the world’s first nuclear power plant was opened.
There are some research institutes in Obninsk three of which are the Government research centers. This city is truly called the first science town of Russian Federation.
Metallurgy and mechanical engineering provide the basis of the industry of the region. Chemical, food and light industry is also rather well developed.
Kaluga region is one of the important centres of pilgrimage. There are monasteries attracting a large number of pilgrims in the territory of the region. So, the Optina Pustyn – an Orthodox monastery for men – is located near Kozelsk. Saint Tikhon Monastery - the ancient men's monastery in Russia is situated in Lev Tolstoy's village, 174 km from Moscow. There is also Paphnutius Monastery in the town of Borovsk.
Kaluga region numbers 4000 monuments of history and culture, 358 from them are protected by the state.
